What It Is:

Stammering is “characterized by stoppages and disruptions in fluency which interrupt the smooth flow and timing of speech. These stoppages may take the form of repetitions of sounds, syllables or words, or of prolongations of sounds so that words seem to be stretched out, and can involve silent blocking of the airflow of speech when no sound is heard” (Enderby, 1996). Speech may sound forced, tense or jerky. People who stammer may avoid certain words or situations which they know will cause them difficulty. Stammering is a British word. Instead, Americans use the word “stuttering”.

Some people avoid and substitute words to such an extent that people in their lives may not realize they have a stammer. This is known as “covert stammering”.

Myths about stammering

All research indicates that the stammering and the non-stammering populations are identical in terms of intelligence, mental state, neurotic behavior etc. The only difference found is that one group stammers and the other doesn’t, but no explanation for this has as yet been identified.
This contradicts the popular perception that people who stammer are less intelligent, more nervous etc. Speed of speech should not be confused with speed of thought. A person who stammers will generally think at normal speed, even though expression of the thoughts may be slower.

Demography:

5% of children under the age of five will go through a phase of stammering at some stage in their speech and language development. Stammering shows strong gender bias. Under the age of five, a boy is twice as likely to suffer from stammering as a girl. However, with the increase in age, this ratio becomes more skewed with men’s chances of stammering about 3.5 to 4 times those of women. Of the adult population in U.K. nearly 1% suffers from stammering.

Causes:

Till date, medical science has not been able to find the cause of stammering. Research seems to suggest that a combination of factors is involved.
Genetics are relevant at least in some cases. Someone with stammering in the family seems more likely to develop a stammer themselves. Brain imaging studies have shown significant differences between the brain activity of people stammering as compared with fluent speakers.

Therapy:

Children showing early signs of stammering should be referred to a speech and language therapist (SLT) as early as possible. Speech and language therapy has proved to be most effective with children aged under 5 years. In many cases when the problem is caught early enough (before psychological issues of anxiety and self consciousness arise) the child is able to learn to speak fluently again with no evidence of recurrence.

For both older children and adults who stammer, the situation is more complex. Modern therapy can help improve fluency, confidence and communication skills but as stammering is more established by this stage it becomes more a case of learning to manage it effectively. While speech and language therapy can continue to make a positive difference in older children and adults, there is no magical ‘cure’ for stammering. The most difficult problems that such people face is that of dealing with inferiority complex. They are advised to be part of some self help group which are now common in cities. If there is no such group, they can take the lead and form one instead.

As the title suggests, Asthma is a chronic condition involving the respiratory system. Asthma happens to be the most common chronic illness in children. In response to one or more triggers, the airways occasionally constrict, become inflamed, and are lined with excessive amounts of mucus. The trigger could be an environmental stimulant such as allergen, tobacco smoke, cold or warm air, perfume, pet dander, moist air, exercise or exertion, or emotional stress. Symptoms include difficulty in breathing, shortness of breath, chest tightness and coughing.Low income people are more likely to be affected by asthma than their high income counterparts. Those houses which have cockroaches are more likely to see occurrence of this malady. Experts attribute these findings to the fact that higher income people have access to better healthcare facilities.

Causes

The exact cause of Asthma is not yet understood by researchers. However, they do know that asthma is caused by a complex interaction of genetic and environmental factors. Studies have found correlation between increase in prevalence of asthma and and increase in use of antibiotics in developed countries.
Causes could be:
1)Environmental: Poor air quality, tobacco smoke, viral respiratory infections, excessive use of antibiotics, Caesarean sections and psychological stress.
2)Genetic: Over 100 genes have been found to be associated with asthma.

One curious finding has been that athletes are more likely to suffer from asthma than other average people. However, experts have questioned the authenticity of these findings. They attribute these observations to the fact that athletes have to exert much much more physically and are thus prone to asthma attacks.

Treatment:

There is no “cure” as such for asthma. Patient should identify triggers such as pets and avoid exposure to them.

Everyone today is familiar with the word stress. It’s no more a new word. Everybody undergoes through the process of stress. But most of us are over stressed. They feel that stress cannot be managed. But that’s not true. Stress can be managed easily with regular practice. Knowing how to
“de-stress” and doing it when things are relatively calm can help you get through challenging circumstances that may arise. This article will disclose the stress management process.

Make A Daily Schedule

Work according to the schedule and take a stand against over scheduling. Do not over load yourself with many responsibilities at the same time. If you are feeling stretched? Try to cut down a few unimportant activities.

Get A Good Night’s Sleep.

Take enough sleep every day. This will help you keep your body and mind in top shape, making you better equipped to deal with any negative stressors. Eight hour sleep is must for all of us. Try to go early to bed and get up early in the morning.

Treat Your Body Well

Regular exercise can also help you manage stress. You can also eat some healthy food that can provide you with vitamins and minerals which our body requires under stressful conditions. Some people have the habit of taking alcohol and smoking while they are under pressure. They believe that alcohol helps them to cope up with the situation but it’s not the right way to cope up with stress. Rather alcohol promotes more stress by wearing down the body’s ability to bounce back

Learn To Relax

If you learn to relax it will help you reduce stress and make you feel calm. The body’s natural antidote to stress is called the relaxation response. By learning simple breathing exercises can make you feel relaxed. Add the activities that can calm you in your schedule which can include reading, spending time with your pet.

Be Optimistic

Try to look at things more positively. A very common example used is, it’s the way you look at the half filled glass to be half empty or half filled. An optimism dose can definitely help you minimize your stress. If you think you are pessimist you can always try to add more positive vibrations and think positive.

Be Realistic

Understand that no human being is perfect. Humans tend to make mistake, we can only try to be perfect. Don’t get disturbed if you have made a mistake. Also do not expect others to be perfect. This will only increase your stress. If you need a help just ask for it.

Solve The Little Problems

Do not avoid problems or run away from them rather try to solve them and get a right solution. Learning to solve everyday problems can give you a sense of control. It will increase your self esteem and confidence. Try to look at things more calmly and get a solution for your problem. Try to figure out options and take some action towards a solution. This will help you fell better in times of stress.

Be Flexible

Try to build a flexible attitude and keep you cool. Try to mould yourself according to the situation and handle problems as they come. Developing attitudes and behavior can help you build resilience. Want to know how? Here are some tips.

Consider each (good or bad) change in your life to be a normal part of your life.
Keep telling yourself that setbacks and problems are temporary and solvable.
Work toward your goal is the only mantra for success.
Do not avoid problems rather solve them.
Try to build strong and good relationships with everyone you meet.
Do not hesitate to ask for a help whenever required.
Have fun and perform activities that make you happy.
Consider challenges to be opportunities and not disasters. Do not allow your stress to increase. And always remember little stress motivates you and improves your performance and help you reach your goal. So don’t be scared of stress.

Are you stressed? If your answer is yes, don’t worry. You are not the only one who experiences stress. Everyone around you is stressed due to some or the other reasons. Yes, not all the time, but everyone experiences stress at times. People in all age groups experience stress. You cannot run away from stress completely but you can definitely reduce stress. There can be many reasons for which we are stressed; it can be work load or any other problem for adults, school test for kids.
To control our stress you must understand the meaning of stress. Let us throw some light on what exactly stress is?

What Is Stress?

We respond to stressors by activating the nervous system and specific hormones. Human body produces sweat and also many changes take place suddenly in the body to cope up with the stressful situation. Adrenal glands are given signal by the hypothalamus to produce more of the hormones adrenaline and cortisol and release them into the bloodstream. These hormones speed up heart rate, breathing rate, blood pressure, and metabolism. Blood vessels open wider to let more blood flow to large muscle groups, putting our muscles on alert. Pupils dilate to improve vision. The liver releases some of its stored glucose to increase the body’s energy. All these changes in the body occurs automatically and prepares a person react quickly and effectively to handle the stressful situation. This is a natural reaction which is called stress response. But the stress response can also cause problems when it overreacts or fails to turn off and reset itself properly.

Stress Can Be Helpful At Times!

Moderate amount of stress can always be helpful to improve your performance. Scientists have found out that, when we are totally relaxed we do not perform at our best on most tasks. A little anxiety and stress motivates us and help us perform better. But too much of stress can spoil it totally. There are evidences that moderate amounts of stress can be a good thing.

When we are too much stressed our ability to perform reduces. When we visit the examination hall for a subject which w consider to be toughest, our stress level is the highest. We may find that we then forget things that we studied. On the contrary when you appear for a test of a subject which you consider to be less tough we tend to remember even those answers which we have read once. This is because we are in less pressure. Moderate stress increases our performance.

We suffer from memory problems when we are in too much stress. In an experiment which was done on mice proves it. Mice who have been trained to run a maze often forget how to run the same maze when under stress. Researchers also found elevated levels of a hormone similar to the human hormone cortisol – sometimes called the “stress hormone.” Elevated cortisol levels may be one reason that too much stress impairs performance on some tasks.

Stress if moderate helps. We must try to moderate our stress and balance it to cope with the demands of life.

Meditation is a valid body state like any other such as sleeping or arousing. It helps to enjoy the benefits of our body state like relaxation, energy and perspective on your life. Meditation is an ultimate brain workout which keeps you away from anxiety, pain, depression, emotional problems, insomnia, and stress.

Are You Thinking How To Start?

You will have to spend only 20 minutes from your daily routine to be away from all your physical and mental problems. Firstly, find a comfortable place to sit where no one can disturb you for at least 20 minutes. While sitting for meditation, your back should be as straight as possible.

Put An Alarm

Setting time will help you avoid unnecessary excuse to get up and “check the time” which is a common hurdle while meditating. Sense of timing is lost while meditating which leads to the feeling that you have gone past the time you set for meditation. This will often happen after you have been sitting for 1 or 2 minutes. A timer helps to assure you that you have not meditated too long. So set a timer and then forget about time.

Concentrate On Your Breathing

Breathing is an unique automatic bodily function. We take over 10 million breaths per year without noticing. Now, we have to control breathing voluntarily. Try to breath slowly which will help your body to relax. Concentrate on your breathing and notice everything about it. Everything the process of inhaling , exhaling and the very tiny pause between the two.
Just be aware of your breath totally.
This is your only task in meditation — be aware of your breath, without losing your concentration. If your thoughts wander, just come back to breathing.

Understand The Aim Of Meditation

The whole idea of meditation is not to stop your thoughts or thinking process but to not interact with them. Coming of many ideas and thoughts in mind while meditation is absolutely normal. The art of meditation lies in coming back to your breathing and not to run after the thoughts. Learn to give a neutral label to your thoughts. Say for example, if you are thinking about everything you have to do at work, label the thoughts ‘work’ and return to breathing.

Do Not Ever Judge Yourself About Meditation

Perfect meditation is impossible. Many days you will find that your entire meditation time was spend thinking about your office or your children or your kitchen etc. Your awareness will drift away and the time will disappear, that’s completely ok. When your ideas go with the flow try to come back and concentrate on your breathing. Try not to divert from your goal of meditation. Each time you distract just come back to your breath. Do not think that you cannot meditate.

Ignore Your Inner Voice

Your inner voice will definitely call you many times to stop you, while meditating. This voice will come up with “great ideas” that you have to do something very important than meditation. The voice will ask you to get up and tell that your meditation time is up.
Don’t listen to the voice. Remember, while you are mediating there is nothing more important for you to do. Just sit.
Try not to flow with the thoughts and just watch them. Observe your thoughts appear and connect to other thoughts. Just watch your thoughts and do not nourish them. At the end you will find many of them useless and meaningless. You will also begin to develop an awareness apart from your thoughts. Perhaps the greatest lesson of meditation is that you are not your thoughts.

Applying Meditation Into Your Life

Meditation teaches you many things. Every day you meditate you learn something from it. Try to apply things you have learned through meditation in your day to day life.

Thinking About The Right Time To Meditate!

Every time is perfect time for meditation. You can meditate whenever you want to. You can always meditate while standing in a queue, feeling lonely or when watering plants etc. etc., etc.

Meditation Is A Daily Practice

Meditation needs daily practice which should be continuous and constant. You should meditate daily without fail. Regular meditation will benefit not only your body and mind but also your soul.

This article will not only tell you the meaning of meditation but at the same time will teach you the true process of meditation. You may be a beginner or a refresher no matter.
You will learn meditation and you will develop meditation as a powerful tool to assist you to live your lives more simple way i.e. without complications.
What Does Meditation Mean?

Before learning the process you must know the exact meaning of meditation.
The Oxford Dictionary defines meditation as 1) “Plan mentally, design.
2) Exercise the mind in contemplation (on or upon subject) ”

Wondering what does this really mean?

Meditation simply means focusing your attention on one thing at a time, in order to still the mind from its constant chatter. It helps your mind to increase concentration. You can easily meditate by concentrating on counting your breath, an object or a mantra.

Your mind never wants to concentrate on one thing. It always keep on wandering. you have to keep in mind that your mind should not wander, its your job to bring it back to its point of focus. The art of meditation lies in this ability to bring the mind back to the point of focus, as soon as it wavers

Know Benefits Of Meditation

Benefits of meditation can be seen only through daily practice. You will see that your concentration has increased tremendously and also you feel more relaxed if you practice regularly. You will find that your will-power has increased and your stress seems to diminish. Also you will always feel fresh as you will experience a better and sound sleep. And if you practice it regularly you will discover many other benefits.

Techniques Of Meditation

1) Counting your breath
This meditation follows the flow of the breath whilst counting from one to ten.
Sit straight comfortably. Firstly, close your eyes and concentrate on your breath. Give attention on your abdominal muscles while you breath. Notice your abdominal muscles expanding as you breathe in, and coming in as you breathe out. Now count your every breath. Inhaling and exhaling make a single breath so count it till ten. Continue up to ten and then begin at one again. Do not let your mind wander, if at all it does try to bring it back
2) Meditate with the help of mantra
Choose a word whichever you like say for example “om“, taking deep breaths. Now sit comfortably and chant your mantra silently to yourself. Say it again and again in your mind and do not let your mind wander here and their.

3) Meditating with the help of candle
This form of meditation involves holding your gaze on the candle flame. Sit comfortably and place a candle one or two metres away from you. Keep looking at it continuously and remember to blink. Try to study the flame and look at it as if you have never seen the flame before. If your though wander try to bring them back and focus on the flame.

4) Mindfulness of breathing meditation

Here you will have to be aware and sense your breathing.
Feel the sensation of the breath as it flows in and out of your nostrils. This is not a breathing exercise, it’s an awareness exercise.
Do not let yourself notice other sensation and if at all it happens focus onto the breath.

Everybody knows regular exercise prevents from major illness such as heart disease, diabetes and colon cancer. Despite this very few care to exercise regularly.

Benefits of regular exercise

Daily exercise helps to prevent many major illnesses. Regular exercise maintains blood sugar levels to prevent or control diabetes, promote bone density to protect against osteoporosis, reduce the overall risk of cancer, increase levels of “good” cholesterol -reducing the risk of developing heart disease, lower high blood pressure-reducing the risk of developing heart disease. It also helps to boost the immune system, self-confidence and help prevent depression, in combination with a balanced diet, help to maintain a healthy weight.

Hurdles which stop you from doing exercise

Many people do not not have a fear of future illness since they do not think about it. This can be one of the reasons for not exercising. But there are many other reasons which stop you from doing regular exercise. There can be many reasons like lack of time, no facilities nearby, cost of equipment etc. One can always overcome these barriers. You can always walk in the evening instead. Everybody knows walking is the best exercise.

It is not necessary to join gym or start playing football, basketball or any other sports. This is a misconception that only vigorous exercise or playing sport counts as healthy exercise. You can always achieve health benefits by doing simple regular physical activity like walking, painting, walking up and down the stairs instead of using lift, skipping, gardening etc. Any activity that can increase your heart rate and make you feel warm can be considered as exercise.

You can always make it possible for you to exercise just by making fairly simple changes to your everyday routine, for which you do not even need to join a gym or a sports club.

Wondering as to, how much time you should exercise?

Any adult whose weight is 60 kg (132lbs) should at least do a brisk walk for 30 minutes. Children and young people should exercise for at least 60 minutes every day. One can also include dancing, jumping or aerobics in his or her daily exercise.

Your daily exercise will help you increase your stamina and keep you fit. You can always start up with 10 minutes of brisk walk or dance and eventually increase the time and frequency of your exercise. Exercise will keep you motivated.

Try to have fun while you exercise

Do not consider exercise as boring, try to have fun while you exercise. If you find brisk walk boring try aerobics or dancing or something you enjoy doing. Try out different sports or activities until you find something you like You can also join a team or sports club where you could meet new friends. When you discover an activity you like, include it in your regular exercise. You can also go to different places like park or beach. Make sure you change your activity every week so you don’t get bored.

Setting smart goal and achieving it

At times you might find it boring to exercise regularly. Hence you should try to motivate yourself. To keep yourself motivated you can maintain a dairy where in you can write your daily progress of your exercise. this will help you look back and see how you have improved over time.
You can also collect and stick quotes from coaches, athletes or anyone successful around. listen to inspirational stories from people who have achieved against the odds this will help you feel – if they can do it, so can you.

Set a short and long term goals. Try to attain short term goals first this will motivate you to attain the long ones. Keep your goals: specific; measurable; achievable; realistic; time-based (SMART). For example, rather than saying you’ll get fit by summer, start by setting the more specific goal of going to a one hour step aerobics class or an ashtanga yoga class each week.

Staying motivated

Staying motivated means train your mind to train your body. Here are just a few ideas to help you. Keep reminding yourself of the reasons you started exercising in the first place. This may include losing excess weight, improving your health or testing yourself in a competition or race. Try to imagine how you will feel after you achieve your goal. These images will motivate you to achieve them for real. Exercising releases chemicals in the brain, like serotonin, that have a strong affect on your mood, helping reduce anxiety, stress and depression. So whenever you don’t feel like exercising, try to remind yourself how good you’ll feel afterwards.
